Huck Finn Racism Is Huck Finn A Racist Book? Ever since its publication over a hundred years ago, controversy has swarmed around one of Mark Twain’s most popular novels, Huck Finn. Even then, many educators supported its dismissal from school libraries. For post Civil-War Americans, the argument stemmed from Twain’s use of spelling errors, poor grammar, and curse words. In the politically correct 1990’s however, the point of argument has now shifted to one of the major themes of the book: Racism. John Wallace once said of the book, â€Å"It’s the most grotesque version of racist trash† ever written. Were Twain’s archetypal characters and use of vernacular language an assertion of his own racist views, or a critique of the injustice of†¦show more content†¦Huck Finn is not racist: It is a profound social statement on the inhumanity of slavery and of every individual’s born right to freedom. In chapter 32, Aunt Sally and Huck discuss a steamboat explosion: â€Å"Good Gracious! Anyone hurt?† asks Aunt Sally. â€Å" No’m. Killed a nigger.† â€Å" Well it’s lucky; because sometimes people do get hurt.† This passage highlights Twain’s use of satire. On the surface, it could easily be interpreted as dehumanizing and bigoted, but Twain only uses it to reveal the cold truths of white attitudes in the 1800’s. It also presents the fact that Aunt Polly, one of the simplest and gentlest characters in the book, does not think twice about the violent death of a black person. While disguised as racism, Twain cleverly breaks down white-black relations to the inanities of prejudice. Less subtle are Huck’s observations of Jim as their relationship progresses. Jim at first is nothing but a source of amusement for Huck, but Huck slowly discovers the real person inside. From this class I learned that the circumstances that you are born into and raised in help shape who you become. Our attitudes and values are shaped early on by those who around us most frequently and hold positions of power in our estimation. As children we both listen and observe the adults around us. Without realizing it, we often take on their points of view until we are challenged. Moreover, few people realize that their deeply held beliefs actually exist because of someone else. Most people are not challenged on their beliefs and values, instead we tend to congregate with other people who share and reinforce our values. When we are challenged and even presented with empirical facts that run counter to our beliefs we are hesitant to change our minds. This is called belief perseverance. Humans use inductive reasoning to support their cognitive bias. Most humans do this. It is hard to simply let of an ingrained notion and take a counter stance. Since facts and information to the c ontrary does not work effectively to change people’s minds, the only option is repeated exposure and experience with the irrefutable facts. The purpose of this research is to find suitable ways to help bullying in the Central Florida School Systems. However, many schools in Volusia County aren’t aware how big of a problem bullying can be. With that said most schools are ignoring the problem and considering it as a part of everyday life (â€Å"Florida†). This research was conducted because children should not have to go to school every day feeling like they are going to be threatened. An interview with an organization official and surveys were handed out to students at Deland High School. The outcome of the surveys and the interview is that there needs to be more awareness on bullying because a lot of people and students in the Central Florida School Systems do not know how to deal with the problem. The results told us that children and adults need more information about how to handle and intervene with certain situations. Introduction: Students are being verbally and physically bullied by their peers in the school systems. Children are struggling every day because of the effect bullying can have on them. Bullying is becoming a serious matter and children need to learn how to intervene and cope with the problem. The rationale behind this research is to try to understand bullying better and to find ways that the problem can be helped. A survey was handed out to high school students to gather information from students who might have experienced bullying and their thoughts on the problem. Also, an interview was conducted to find out how the effects of bullying are being helped and what can further be done to help the problem. The purpose of this research is to help intervene and find ways to decrease bullying in the Central Florida School Systems. Bullying is becoming a serious problem and needs to be addressed promptly to try to lessen the effects. It can make many children feel very insecure about themselves and start to feel depressed, which has led to suicidal deaths here in Volusia County (â€Å"Florida†). Children should be able to go to school without having to worry what one person might do or say to them. This research helps gather more information that is needed to help decrease bullying in the Volusia County School System. Bullying is at its all-time high in the school systems today (â€Å"National†). The percentages of students between the ages of 12 through 18 that have reported being bullied in Florida have increased 27. 7 percent since 2008 (â€Å"National†). In order to help prevent bullying, Florida has a new law that every Volusia County School System must adopt the Jeffery Johnson Stand Up for All Students Act. This is a policy that prohibits bullying on school grounds and school network computers. This also allows programs to educate students and teachers on the consequences of bullying. However despite the law, there were still 6,134 reported incidents of bullying in the 2011/2012 school year (â€Å"National†). The act is not completely effective because of being out of date and lags behind in research. Children are still afraid and feel uncomfortable to speaking up if they are being bullied. Many Volusia County high schools aren’t doing enough to put more of a stop to bullying and to take action (â€Å"National†). There is more that can be done to let children feel more comfortable to stand up and talk to an adult about being bullied before it gets taken too far. Research shows that bullying and harassment of others can lead to poorer educational outcomes, lower future aspirations, lack of confidence and self-esteem, and even lead to depression as an adult (â€Å"Home†). Programs like the Jeffery- Johnston-Stand-Up-for-All-Students-Act and the StopBully. ov are a huge help to the Central Florida School Systems to help stop bullying (â€Å"Home†). But according to statistics there should still be more done to protect these children in the schools of Volusia County (â€Å"Florida†). Adults in the school should take bullying as a serious matter, or the bullying will continue (â€Å"Home†). Volusia County Schools are finding nonprofi t organizations to further help train teachers and staff on bullying and how to handle situations of bullying in a classroom. They are giving them skills on how to appropriately intervene on bullying. Also, there is a higher risk of bullying in settings where there is little to no adult monitoring. Deltona High School is currently finding â€Å"hot spots† for bullying on campus and has started to monitor those areas more than before. This has helped reduce bullying so far by small amounts (â€Å"Florida†). An interview with someone who is educated on bullying will be very helpful for this research. It will show us the serious impacts of how bullying can effect a child. The interview will give help us understand a different perspective on bullying and also why kids might bully on others. Also, it will give more information on the toll it can take on a child to be bullied and why they are the target of bullies. Surveys that were handed out will give different perspectives on bullying from the high school students at Deland High School. This will allow a better understanding from the kids about bullying and how it affects them personally. Surveying the High School Students: The purpose of surveying high school students is to try to understand their thoughts on bullying and also their experiences. The survey consists of four questions to get a better understanding to gather ways to help stop bullying. The first question on the survey is, â€Å"Would you tell an adult at the school if you are being bullied†. About seventy five percent of the students that took the survey said no, they do not feel comfortable enough to talk to an adult about being bullied. They also felt that the bullying wouldn’t change so they did not see the point in going to an adult about the problem. A few students stated that they feel bullying now is just a part of life and that we will all have to go through it. The second survey question is, â€Å"If you see someone that is being bullied, would you want to help stop the bullying? About ninety three percent of the survey takers said that they would want to try to stop the bullying but they aren’t sure how to approach the situation without possibly making it worse. One student even stated that they have tried to intervene before and it only made it worse by getting another person involved. The third survey question is, â€Å"Do you thi nk emotional problems have a lot to do with bullying? † About 85% of the students surveyed said they believed that emotional problems were the reason that people felt the need to bully. One student even responded saying that the common trait with bullying is lack of empathy and not have the ability to be aware or understand other people’s feelings. So when the bully attacks someone they have the feeling of being in control and feels above the other person. So the bully feels better about themselves by the feeling of being inferior to the person they bullied on. The fourth survey questions asks, â€Å"Have you ever been bullied and how did it make you feel? † About 70% of the students surveyed said they have been bullied either verbally or physically while in high school. A few students said they were bullied so much it became difficult for them to make friends and had a poorer relationship with their classmates than the other students because of low self-esteem. The overall study of the survey made it clear that most of the students that were surveyed were scared to do anything about the bullying or were scared to speak up about it. They also believe that bullying is just a part of everyday life, but most students suggested that talking about bullying and letting teachers and staff be more aware of the problem would help tremendously. Interview: An interview was conducted with Sean Ritcher who is a part of a non-profit organization called, â€Å"Preventing Bullying in Volusia County â€Å". His part in the organization is to help train people to go to schools and talk about bullying. He helps us to inform students with his research on ways they can stop bullying and how they educate people to end bullying. During the interview, Ritcher stated that he and other people of the organization go to schools and teach the children ways to peacefully solve the problem and to stand up for themselves verbally, not violently. He stated that most children are afraid to take action against bullying and tell an adult because they feel that the bullying will just get worse. They show students how to help others that are being bullied. Also, ways to cope with the problem and safely take action. They also stated that they stress to the students if you or you know someone is being bullied to speak up and let an adult at the school know the situation and what is going on. Ritcher continued to say that raising awareness and ways to acknowledge school administrators really does decrease bullying. He said their program reconstructs the learning environment to create a social climate characterized by supportive adult involvement, by having positive role models and setting firm limits that there are no exceptions for bullying. In order to effectively accomplish their goals and reduce the amount of bullying and to prevent future problems, their program must lead the teachers, administrators, and staff through a series of tasks that make them aware of the bullying and stress the ways that are going to solve it. Ritcher feels that every school in Volusia County should have their guest specialist go to the schools to let people be more aware on the bullying and how big the problem can be. He says that they have already reduced bullying at Deltona High just buy raising awareness on the problem and ways to prevent bullying. The interview indicated that more awareness needs to be raised in order to decrease bullying. Results: This project was conducted to research ways to prevent bullying in Volusia County and to find a suitable way to prevent the problem of bullying. The studies from the interview with Ritcher showed that Preventing Bullying in Volusia County organization helped reduced the amount of bullying in the schools which they raised awareness. It helped reduce the amount of bullying by training and educating teachers and staff on bullying and the serious effects it can have on some children. Also, conclusions form the survey results show that most kids are afraid to speak up and talk about bullying or don’t know how to cope with the situation if they are around bullying. That’s why raising awareness from the organization here in Central Florida will help lessen the bullying and help children feel more confident about speaking up if they are being harassed or bullied on. Conclusions made from this research clearly show that using the organization, Preventing Bullying in Central Florida, decreases bullying when the schools are being educated on the bullying that is going on in their school. The information from Preventing Bullying in Central Florida could help Volusia County with bullying and can help prevent bullying in multiple ways according to Richer. The knowledge from this research will help prevent bullying in the school systems if solutions are put to use by the schools. Ritcher states children will be able to go to school in a better and safer, bullying-free environment. It may be hard for managers to implement change, but here are some suggestions to managers to implement change successfully. First of all, managers should have a good planning of change before they carry out. Queensland government (n. ) pointed out that successfully managing the complexity of change is virtually impossible without a robust plan that is supported by strong project management. Planning is help manager to be aware of what they want to achieve and how they going to achieve it. Secondly, managers should encourage participate. When anticipating making a change, get the team members who will be affected by that change involved early on, find out what make them afraid of change and find out the way to overcome their fear to support change (Stark, 2010). The key to change is to let go the fear—Rosanne Cash (Rick, 2011). To let go people’s fear, managers should often remind people that they are a team and nobody is alone. Managers should also let people understand clearly why they need to change; many people will resist change unless they see that the change is urgently needed and remind them the positive consequences of being change. Then, managers must be able to listen to people’s suggestion. When managers want to apply change, they should not only announce to the people. When managers intending to introduce change, the planning process should involve input from the workforce on the best way to implement the change. People ill be far more committed to the change if they see that their perceptions have been considered and with a sense of ownership over ideas and concepts, they will embrace the change with open arms (Future prospect, n. d). Beside that, managers have to monitor the progress over time and make adjustment as necessary (Hamlin, 2011). Managers must make sure that all the activities are helping the team change effectively otherwise, it is wasting time for people to put so much effort on activities that are not helping them to change. Not only those fields which are mentioned above need to be considered, managers also need to consider about the philosophy, psychology and also anthropology According to American Society of Mechanical Engineers (Karmarkar, 2012, p. 1), Management is the art and science of preparing, organizing and directing human efforts to control the forces and utilize the material of nature for the benefit of men. It is consider as science because management problems can be approached in ways that are rational, logical, objective and systematic. Then, it also called as art because although managers try to be scientific as possible but they must make decision and solve problems on the basis of intuition, experience, instinct and personal insights (Davidson, Simon, Woods, Griffin, 2009, p. 21). Thus, people hesitate of change is not an issue that warrants examination only in the study of management, it also in science and art field. Management science has to learn from other fields in order to understand of what people do and why they do it. One of the fields can management learn from is Sociology (Management’s connection to other field of study for principles of management, 2008). Sociology is the study of people in relationship to their fellow human beings (Robbins et al. , 2011, p. 16). The problem of sociology that link to managers is the society changes such as globalisation and cultural diversity. During the days organisation is changing towards globalization, people who are lack of confidence to change in order to compete with others will hesitate to change. Further, different culture have different attitude in their work. For an example, traditional Chinese will think that changing company bring them risk or uncertainty. In general, managers mostly need to understand the affect of social forces in any consideration of management in that society (Davidson et al. , 2009, p. 37). Further, managers have to look into economics. Economics is concerned with the allocation and distribution of scarce resources (Robbins et al. , 2011, p. 16). Economic system and economic conditions are associated in management. During bad economic conditions such as economy recession or depression, most of the people are not dare to involve in any change because they will worry that they loss what they already hold in hand in this suffer period. Thus, managers have to look into the economic condition of that period to determine whether change can be done at that particular period and have an effective result in change. In addition, the relevant field with management is political science. Political are the government institutions, attitudes and policies that affect business (Davidson et al. , 2009, p. 37). Specific topics concern to political scientists include structuring of conflict, allocating power and manipulating power for individual self interest (Robbins et al. , 2011, p. 16). Government nowadays is increasing aware to organisation’s moral and legal responsibility, this forces affect management theory in planning, organisational design, Robert F. Kennedy once said, â€Å"About twenty percent of the people are against any change. † (Stark, 2010) Why people are so afraid of change? By reading the text, the reason that individuals dislike to change is because it will replaces the known with uncertainty, it requires people to do things out of habit, people fear of losing, disagreement with the necessity to change and limited tolerance for change (Robbins, DeCenzo, Coulter, Woods, 2011, p. 193). Besides all these causes, there are more reason about why individuals dislike or afraid of change. First of all, an individual may against towards all new things (Frank Calberg Service, 2007). For an example an individual maybe complaining or refuse to learn new things. People who dislike learning or accepting new knowledge will give a lot of excuse to escape changing by saying that they have no time, no money to pay to attend courses or training (Redman, 2012). Secondly, people are self doubt (Pratt, 2012). Usually people who are self doubt mostly named themselves not good enough, not smart enough, boring, unattractive, and unlikeable, self doubt can lead them to get defensive (Fox, Sokol, 2009). People who are in self doubt situation will defense themselves do not do others thing that they never try before because they don’t have enough confidence to change (Exposing fear of change, 2011). Further, individuals who are fear of change may because they afraid the bad experience in the past repeat in their life (Radwan, 2012). Individuals who had tried to change in their past but obtained a traumatic experience of change that haunts them will affect them feel so afraid of changing. However, Dr Swaim (2011) argued that people do not afraid of change. He claimed that if people afraid of change then how to explain that there is a big changes in election victory of a little known junior senator form Illinious, Barack Hussein Obama, whose 2007based on the slogan â€Å"change we can believe in†. In addition, a psychologist and life coach Dr Suzy Green (n. d) also argued that most of the people find change is scary is just an excuse. She also claimed that individual makes excuse is because they has low confident or failure in past of changing. Secondly, old habits of individuals is ingrained and it is hard to shake off the behaviors that been developed for a long time, she explained that the excuses people make when they are not ready to tackle their behaviors need to be turned around. The movie of The Queen focuses on individual’s change and it pointed out that change request individual to give up the comfortable ways of thinking and acting. Further, comfort zone is the external environment tends to be placid or at least changes are slow or predictable and it has the ability to change (Jarret, 2009, p. 44). In another word, individual is required to give up the habits they used to be in daily life. For individual to leave their comfort zone is sounds scary to them because it will make them feel anxious (Pawlik-Kienlen, 2007). Individual will feel anxious because they afraid of failure, afraid of new things, fear of criticism and fear of discomfort (O’Callahan, 2012). In addition, Jeffery Schwartz and Sharon Begley in the article claimed that it is hard near the core of brain if habits that a person form by training and experience. Further, brain use intense energy in processing new material, this process enquiry brain to work hard to match new material. Chris Berdik (2012) agrees by saying that evaluating every new experience in detail would be tough on our brains and it would hog energy and attention that could be better used elsewhere. Furthermore, accept new things require forming new connections within the brain, which results in greater conscious effort and attention on our part People need to do their work by writing down everything but nowadays everyone is using a computer or laptop to help them finish all theirs works without any delays. Further, nowadays more companies are trying to be globalisation instead of doing business within own country to earn more profit and individual who working in that particular company gets higher salary and maybe get a chance to fly. All these changes to people in an organisation are easily to be seen and it seems like bringing them a lot of benefits. So, is it can be concluded that changing is easy to be achieved for an individual and they love to change without any hesitate? It cannot be judged shallowly, we have to look deep inside before making a conclusion. A deeper discussion will be presented in the following literary works.
